Problem

First-time parents always have similar experiences or problems with making baby food.

You have some ingredients in the fridge but not sure if you can prepare a balanced meal for them.

You are not sure about what and when to prepare food for your baby.

Your babies are so picky with the ingredients that they waste a lot.

Your baby loves some ingredients now but refuses to eat them another day. You want to keep track of them.

Ideation

The initial questions that drives our design is:

How can we design an APP to
Help FIRST-TIME parents to prepare baby food and make plans?

To answer this question, we use contextual inquiry, participant observation, and interviews to gain insights for design.

We did 15 interviews with those who make their own baby food. To narrow down the question, our design serves parents with babies/toddlers between 4-20 months.

Research Finding

We interviewed 10 first-time parents individually to understand their frustrations and needs when it comes to feeding their baby.

After collecting the interview, we were able to found out their two major frustrations.

New parents always struggle with when, what, and how much to feed their baby.

-   “I have a 9 months boy. I saw some kid's milk or yogurt in the grocery store, but I have no idea when and how much I should give him. I just can not ask the pediatrician all the time.”

-   "My daughter is 10 months old and I have no idea if I could give her some solid food or what kind of solid food I could give it to her."

How to keep the balance between nutrition intake and the baby's food preference?

-   "I always put some vegetable smash like carrot or spinach or fish oil to keep the nutrition for her, but she refused to eat or eat a little. If I just give her rice cereal with milk, she could eat a lot."

-   "My son doesn’t like fish or shrimp smash, but he likes to eat rice and noodle with a little salt and oil which makes me so worried and anxious."

Our Idea

Learn what pediatricians and dietitians are recommending as the first foods to try. Discover 100+ whole food ingredients organized by weaning stage and the essential food groups. Also, input and use the user's food ingredients.

Get smart insights from the food history and planned meals. The user's data input will be converted into intuitive graphs. Users will be able to see what their baby most commonly eats, if the meals are balanced, and how the feeding progress is going. With our smart planner, users can also learn what recipes they should try next, and which foods their baby prefers.

Just one click keep the history of what foods have been safely tried. Create a watchlist to manage the baby’s food allergies and sensitivities.
